This is quite a treat for me! My mother saves everthything, and the portraits on this page are photos of some of the work I did 15 to 20 years ago. I apologize for the images being grainy, but that is the best I can do since there were no digital cameras back in the day and these were taken with a very inexpensive camera. This particular portrait was done 15 to 20 years ago using prisma colored pencils. I remember the lady who commissioned this portrait asking me to have the image of her sailor son large and the two ladies smaller at the bottom corners. I thought it was odd to make him so much larger - but when you are getting paid - you do what they want! The two ladies are his sister and his fiance'. Its fun to look back at these and notice the dated hairstyles... OH that 80s hair!
All of the artwork on this page were done around the same time. I was getting commissions right and left just in time for Christmas. My boys were small at the time and this provided them with the most lucrative Christmas that I can remember. This portrait was commissioned by the sister of the woman in the drawing.
I did this portrait for a good friend I worked with. She is sitting on the bike to your left. Her husband has since passed away due to a motorcycle accident and the last time I talked to her she had remarried. It is fuzzy in this photo so it is hard to make our her face, but you can see the 80s hairstyle for men here with Larry's "Eric Estrada style" . I remember working on this drawing while on jury duty and a very helpful older gentleman sat next to me and began to give me tips. It turned out he is the artist who created the original KU Jayhawk. That mascot we have all come to know... When I painted the portrait of Maurice King last year, I remembered meeting the gentleman artist and had one of those "full circle" moments that Oprah is always talking about.
This portrait was commissioned due to this being a blended family who did not yet have any photos of the blended family as one. I had to put two separate photos 'together' in a way that it looked like they all belonged in the same scene. I beleive it was a sister-in-law who had this made.
This portrait was commissioned by a very proud grandmother. The baby must be about 18 years old by now... There were more portraits, but these are the ones my mom has photos of. I hope you enjoyed them, and maybe they gave you some good ideas of your own for the portrait you want to commission me to paint with acrylic on canvas.
